An MPPT controller tracks the panel's maximum power point and converts the surplus voltage into extra charging current, which is where the 20 to 30 percent gain over a PWM controller comes from. The gain is largest in cold weather and whenever the array voltage sits well above the battery voltage, so MPPT is the right choice for any array over a couple of hundred watts.
Pick the controller by the array's current at your battery voltage with about 25 percent headroom, and check that the array's open-circuit voltage stays under the controller's input limit on the coldest morning.
