MPPT Solar Charge Controllers

MPPT charge controllers for 12 V and 24 V battery banks, 20 A to 60 A, plus the Victron SmartSolar 150/45 for 12 V to 48 V systems with higher-voltage arrays.

An MPPT controller tracks the panel's maximum power point and converts the surplus voltage into extra charging current, which is where the 20 to 30 percent gain over a PWM controller comes from. The gain is largest in cold weather and whenever the array voltage sits well above the battery voltage, so MPPT is the right choice for any array over a couple of hundred watts.

Pick the controller by the array's current at your battery voltage with about 25 percent headroom, and check that the array's open-circuit voltage stays under the controller's input limit on the coldest morning. Our listings give both figures. For small arrays where price matters more than harvest, see the PWM controllers.

Rough current sizing: array watts ÷ battery voltage = charge amps (for example, 800W ÷ 12V ≈ 67A, so an 80A MPPT controller). Panel open-circuit voltage rises in cold weather, so keep the series string's cold-weather Voc below the controller's maximum PV input.

Not included unless listed

  • Solar panels, batteries and mounting
  • PV and battery cables, fuses and breakers
  • Temperature sensor or remote display, unless listed
Can I use residential (60/72/108-cell) panels with a PWM controller?

Not efficiently. Their voltage is much higher than a 12V battery. Use an MPPT controller.

Does the controller work with lithium batteries?

Check that it has a LiFePO4 or user-defined charging profile, and set it to the voltages in the battery datasheet.

Common questions

Before you order.

If yours isn't here, ask an engineer. It costs nothing and it's the step most people skip.

What if I'm not sure this is the right product?

Ask before you order. Send us what you need to run, or your pool or well figures, and an engineer will confirm the choice — it costs nothing. Or use the finder below, which sizes from what you actually run and shows its reasoning.
